Newport, N.C. — Four puppies were poisoned and left for dead on the side of State Road 24—between Hibbs and McCabe roads—on May 12. Two of the animals survived, and necropsies of the other two dogs indicated that they had consumed rat poison. "There is no excuse for this kind of cruelty toward animals," county animal control officer Jeanette Saunders told news sources. Police have yet to make any arrests in connection with the puppies’ poisonings. That is why PETA is offering as much as $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for this crime.
Will you please consider sharing this information with your audience? It may be the only way to apprehend those responsible for this heinous act.
PETA believes that other animals in the area—and even human residents—may be in danger as long as those responsible for this crime are at large and is urging residents not to leave animals outside unattended.
"Animal abusers are cowards," says PETA Cruelty Caseworker Kristin DeJournett. "They take their issues out on the most defenseless beings available to them. Area residents have reason to be concerned. According to leading mental health professionals and law enforcement agencies, perpetrators of violent acts against animals are often repeat offenders who pose a serious threat not only to other animals but also to the community as a whole."
Anyone with information about this case is encouraged to contact the Carteret County Sheriff’s Office at 252-504-4800.
