How to Place a PETA Billboard PSA

PAID BILLBOARDS
Go to PETAPSA.com and click on “Print PSAs” to determine the type of board you would like to place. WARNING: Billboards are typically a very expensive way to advertise. Billboard advertisers have to pay monthly fees for the billboard space and also have to pay the production costs of the artwork for the space.

Billboards can run from $700 to $10,000—depending on the location—per month. The advantage with a paid billboard is that you can choose the location and determine (within your budget) how long it will stay up. Billboards make a big impact and tend to get the attention of the media—which allows us to get animal issues into the news. Should you choose to put up a paid billboard, your donated dollars will be put to good use.

PUBLIC SERVICE BILLBOARDS
For billboards that are not considered “controversial,” you can request public service announcement (PSA) space. That is, when billboard companies have unsold billboard space, they often provide the empty space for the use of nonprofit organizations free of charge. The nonprofit organization, or in this case the activist, is only responsible for the production of the artwork. Depending on the size, the cost can be from $300-$1,000 per billboard. The advantage with PSA billboard space is that it is free. The disadvantage is that you do not get to choose how long it stays up or where it will be posted.

Once you have determined which type of board you want to place and which PETA billboard you would like to put up, look in your local yellow pages under “outdoor advertising.” Call companies that offer billboard advertising and ask to speak to their account representatives. Tell the representatives that you are interested in putting up a billboard and ask about prices if you are interested in a paid billboard or the availability of PSA space if you prefer that. They will help you from there.

If you have any questions or if you have arranged for a billboard to be put up and you need artwork sized and sent to the billboard company, contact the Action Team Coordinator at 757-622-PETA, or by e-mail at ATeam@peta.org.
